What microsuction is — and why it’s safer
Microsuction uses a fine, low-pressure suction device and a microscope to remove wax under direct vision. Unlike syringing or ear candling, no water is flushed into the ear and nothing is done blind — which makes it the method recommended for most people, including those with a history of ear problems or perforations.
Because it’s carried out by a specialist audiologist, we also check the health of your ear canal and eardrum while we’re there — so you get a proper assessment, not just a clean-out.
For a small number of patients — depending on ear health or personal preference — gentle ear irrigation can be a more suitable alternative to microsuction. We’ll always recommend whichever method is safest and most comfortable for you, and talk you through it before we start.

Common questions
Is microsuction safe?
Yes — it is the method most recommended by ENT and audiology specialists. Because it is done under direct vision with no water, it is suitable for most people, including those with a perforation or a history of ear surgery.
Does it hurt?
For most people it is painless — you will hear the suction, which can be loud for a moment, but it is not painful. If your ear is inflamed we will tell you honestly and adjust.
Do I need to soften the wax first?
It helps but is not always essential. Using olive oil drops for a few days before your appointment can make removal quicker and more comfortable. We will advise you when you book.
How long does the appointment take?
Usually under 30 minutes, including examination and aftercare advice. Very stubborn wax occasionally needs a second visit, which we will discuss with you.
