Seeing what an otoscope can’t
Looking in the ear tells us about the eardrum’s surface. Tympanometry tells us how it’s actually working — whether it moves freely, and whether there’s fluid, negative pressure or a eustachian-tube problem behind it.
It’s especially useful for recurring blockages, a feeling of fullness, hearing that comes and goes, or after colds and flights that leave your ears “off”.

Common questions
Is it uncomfortable?
No. A soft rubber tip sits in the ear opening and you feel a brief change in pressure and a low tone for a couple of seconds. It is fine for children too.
Why would I need this rather than just a hearing test?
A hearing test measures how well you hear; tympanometry explains why. Together they give the full picture — which is why we often do both.
Do you test children?
Yes. It is quick and well tolerated, and it is one of the most useful tests for glue ear and recurrent ear problems in children.
