Off-the-shelf earplugs are cheap and fine for the occasional use — but if you swim regularly, sleep badly because of noise, play in a band, or work somewhere loud every day, generic foam plugs stop being a good enough answer fairly quickly. Custom ear moulds, made from an impression of your own ears, are a different level entirely.
Why “custom” actually matters
Every ear canal is a slightly different shape, which is exactly why generic plugs never quite fit right — too loose to seal properly, or so tight they’re uncomfortable within an hour. A mould taken directly from your own ear seals properly without pressure, stays in place through movement, and can be worn for hours without the ache generic plugs cause.
The main types, and who they’re for
- Swim plugs — keep water out completely, useful for anyone prone to ear infections, “swimmer’s ear”, or who simply hates water in their ears
- Sleep plugs — softer, low-profile moulds designed to be comfortable lying on your side all night
- Musicians’ filtered plugs — reduce volume evenly across frequencies rather than muffling everything, so music still sounds like music, just quieter and safer
- Motorsport and shooting protection — built for higher, sudden noise levels where standard hearing protection often isn’t enough
- Moulds for hearing devices — a precise fit for anyone already using hearing aids or assistive listening devices
How the process works
It starts with an ear examination — any wax is cleared first, so the impression is accurate. A soft material is then placed in each ear and sets gently over a few minutes, capturing the exact shape of your canal. That impression goes off to be made into your finished moulds, which are usually ready within one to two weeks, when we check the fit and comfort with you in person.
A mould that’s made to fit only your ears seals properly without pressure — which is the whole difference between protection you actually wear, and protection that sits in a drawer.
Are they worth it over cheaper plugs?
If you only need protection once or twice a year, generic plugs are perfectly reasonable. But if you’re reaching for earplugs weekly — swimming, gigging, working, or just trying to sleep through noise — the comfort and reliability of a custom fit tends to pay for itself many times over, simply because you’ll actually wear them.
